Plumbing fun

27 Feb

Last Thursday we had nasty yellow water bubbling up from our tub drain and our toilet didn’t work. We had the apartment maintenance guys over and they flushed out the central line out of our apartment building. We were “homeless” for a few hours and we went to the mall and had a nice time just looking around and walking and talking.

Things looked good over the weekend– I sterilized the tub and floor (bathroom was the cleanest it’s ever been!) and we got back to life. Today I woke up with a headache so I gave babe to dad and took a nap. He woke me up a few hours later to a water emergency! I was groggy and confused but quickly figured out that our hall floor was soggy and water was pooled on our bathroom floor. I made an emergency call to the apartment manager and they got the maintenance crew back over here. We headed back out for a few hours to drive around (babe got a good nap!) and wait it out.

I guess the drain line out of the building had some tree roots in it. When they flushed it Thursday they knew they needed to have it really cleaned out but thought the’d have a few weeks to shop around for estimates & get a good price. BUT apparently the tree root was more serious than they thought. I’m just glad it was pretty clean water backed up into our home rather than nasty yellow stuff.

Tonight we have a big fan and dehumidifier in our apartment and the floors are getting dried out. Tomorrow our carpets will be cleaned. In the meantime we will have some good food, drink a little wine, and relax. It’s a pain to have water problems, but not the end of the world. It turns out my boss is sick so I didn’t miss anything today. Tomorrow is a new day!

A Day in the Park

26 Feb

The sun was shining today so we brought out our vintage film camera and some film and took some pics. I love them!! I love random photo days to just capture our family and our life 🙂

It was FREEZING out but totally worth it!
In other news, my dear grad school friend had her baby this weekend. So much love around here!

Learning to sit

The last few days, babe has been working on sitting. He’s tired of laying like a baby and resists it more often than not. This resulted in a few days spent largely in my arms exploring the world. Yesterday we got his new booster seat/high chair and he is so happy to sit like a big boy! He is also working on sitting on his own–another big milestone coming along 🙂

Gradbaby

18 Feb

THIS is how my blog got it’s name. Today I’ve been working on my PhD exam readings with a fussy baby, so I just got him him into the moby wrap and he snuggled right up. Now I can bounce him on my exercise ball while my hands are free to work. He’s so warm and sweet–and I’m getting work done!

5 months!

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s day, my love! You are now 5 months!!

The stats: Baby is in size 3 diapers and 6m or 6-9 month clothing. Our crude measuring system shows your weight is around 18 pounds (dad jumped on the scale, then got off, picked up babe and got back on, approx 18 lbs heavier).

Nicknames: Nikitos, lastochka, muffin, burp-monster, milk-monster, zaychenunya, lapochka, krasavits…

Temperament: More and more emotions every day. You have your cranky moments. You haves things you don’t like. Mostly you’re chill, observant, and HAPPY!

Things I Could Do Without: Screaming – when you don’t like something you let us know. Luckily it’s easy to figure out–too tired and you need to sleep or you don’t want to go in the carseat right now. You have perfected the blood-curdling scream.

Item/Toy We All Love The Most: The little frog that your grandparents gave you that you used to love to watch (it has a pull-string that vibrates when it goes up and balls that spin around).. . now you have the strength and control to pull it yourself. You actually already broke the one you had as a newborn. Luckily you got a 2nd one at Christmas!

Things I’m Loving Most Right Now: Smiles! And talking! And all the interaction with you. One morning you and I were sleeping/napping in the morning, you decided it was time for mom to get up. So I woke up with fingers in my eye – open your eyes! Wake up!

Things You’re Loving Most Right Now: Going out – trips to the store or walks through the neighborhood give you endless wonder (and usually an epic nap). At home it’s the same ol’, same ol’, while going out is new and exciting! Whether it’s a trip to Target or a nature walk, everything is SO exciting. And that excitement ends with a nap, which makes everyone happy. You don’t sleep well at home during a day, but almost every trip out ends with a long nap so we’re really bringing you into our lives.

My, how you have grown!

1 month:

5 months:

This month has been pretty amazing – you’re growing so chubby! Your emotions are growing more distinct! You’re growing hair (blonde & curly)! Your routine is becoming more distinct and yet we have shaped a routine that perfectly fits our lives. You fall asleep easily, wake up only a couple times at night, and you’re usually joyous. It is such an honor to be your ma and pa!!!

hey, horse… come here now!

Ok, guys, I’m done!!
